The Rise of Skywalker is a relentless thrill ride, moving from one plot point to another, and offering plenty of fantastic set pieces and nods to elements of the original trilogy. And when he learns the true secret of Rey’s origin, he knows it’s the key that could turn her to the dark side forever. Speaking for myself, as an original Star Wars fan since 1977, I’m mostly satisfied with The Rise of Skywalker. These issues made me wonder how things might have looked if Disney had used either the Dolby Vision or HDR10+ premium HDR systems on the 4K Blu-ray transfer. Every Detail is clean and the black tones are deep and rich. In typical Disney style, though, we only get the basic HDR10 format, which lacks the extra scene by scene image data the other two formats provide. Right from the opening shot the film posts some strikingly aggressive HDR use, as blindingly bright, richly coloured lightsabers puncture the darkness around them with fearsome intensity. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker was shot on a mix of 35 and 65mm film and, happily, given a 4K digital intermediate that provides the picture on this 4K Blu-ray. While the mix does include height effects, though, I didn’t feel quite as cocooned in a dome of three-dimensional audio space as I have with the very best Atmos mixes. While Rey (Daisy Ridley) completes her Jedi training under the tutelage of her new master, General Leia (Carrie Fisher), Finn, Poe, and Chewie (John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Joonas Suotamo) recover intelligence from a First Order mole confirming not only the return of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) but the impending galaxy-wide invasion of his vast Final Order fleet. The first big improvement are the black levels, starting with the opening crawl in space. The slightly plasticky, forced look to skin tones in some dark scenes could be down, too, to a degree of compression in the image. The picture has a slightly linear contrast which gives little depth to the picture. You can also see some subtle differences in the way different lightsabers radiate their light that I haven’t really felt aware of before outside of a Dolby Cinema. The bright areas illuminate off the screen—blinding you (in a good way) in the process. The HDR grade expands the contrast while allowing the highlights to really pop—the brightest parts of the image are just eye-reactive (per the disc’s metadata, peak brightness is 1000 nits with a deep floor). Using deleted footage shot for the previous installments, they’ve built whole scenes around her that actually work. Shadows are truly deep, yet retain very nice detail on their own. Not only does it offer a thorough look behind the scenes at the making of this film—including key moments like the filming of Leia’s scenes, the return of Billy Dee Williams and Dennis Lawson, and the recording of Williams’ score—but it frequently cuts back to rare behind the scenes material shot during the making of the original trilogy too. If you enjoy the film, 4K disc is definitely the best way to watch it at home. Some of the daylight desert shots look a touch bleached, while just occasionally skin tones in dark scenes look a touch forced and lacking in shading subtlety. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker is a solid and fitting conclusion to the sequel trilogy and to the Skywalker saga as a whole. Again, though, I didn’t think the image looked as consistently crisp and textured as some other native 4K transfers I’ve seen. But again, The Skywalker Legacy is superb. Rey gets in her daily self-isolation bit of exercise. Dialogue is crystal clear, while effects have a full tonal quality. In that time I'm fairly confident that I've reviewed more TVs and projectors than any other individual on the planet, as well as experiencing first-hand the rise and fall of all manner of great and not so great home entertainment technologies. Rey doesn't get the pay off she deserved with The Rise Of Skywalker. As usual with Disney 4K Blu-ray releases, the film is presented on a 66GB disc, rather than a 100Gb one. My hats off to Paterson and her whole team for their work on it. You flip through the book a film at a time.
